This was my third IS lesson. I am really happy in this lesson because finnally, we are learning to create a website!!
But before learning into creating websites, our teacher taught us how to create html files first. Actually, creating a website does not require an expensive software or very high skill and information of computer. It just requires a good memory and a simple software that can be found in your computer--Notepad. (Start-Programs-Accesories-Notepad)
What's the use of notepad? Isn't it just used for collecting notes???? Well, that's what the program's called? Well, yes it is for collecting notes, but also for creating HTML files. Actually in every website, it is more commonly designed by using notepad to create a HTML file and upload it to the net. In some websites, you right click, then click View Source. There are a lot of words and codes like html, head, body etc. inverted by <>. But all the words you see is actually equal to what you see in the website. For instance, If you want to display I am XXX in your website, then you need to type pc inverted in <> , then "I am XXX", and the other end is /p inverted in <>. P is paragraph. But this is not enough, as you need to type in other inverted words, the first is html, then the title, head, body, and every inverted word with the ending added a / in front of the word.
To test our ability in html codes, the eacher set us one an assignment to create a website, not on the web but on a hard disk. By the way, website on a disk is different than on the web. The websites on the disk is not on the web for publicity viewing, as it is stored in your disk, not on the web. If you open the website or if it is on your hard disk(that should be mentioned as html. document), you would see that the http:// is viewed as C\Documents and Settings\ or whichever place you stored at your harddisk. Well, in how to post the html document on the web, our teacher will teach us next week. I think it has to be related with webserver and URL encode.
I look forward on next week's lesson. I hope that I could learn how to create a website as quick as I can. I also hope that I could receive the information on creating websites, or all I knew would be useless.

My second IS lesson
My second IS lesson is on the topics, the social impact of new media technologies, ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property and blog/website differences. ( www.webnewmedia.ning.com)
The first topic is the social impact of new media and techonologies. What is the impact of technology with us humans nowadays? Technologies are so advanced that it interacts with humans, using voice control, touch sensor, GPS tracker and other things you can think of. From all these technologies, we can have a lot of advantages. We can use internet to send messages to the person with just one click, rather than writing it on a piece of paper, put it in a envelope, and send it to the postman and let him do the rest. No, with technology we can say bye bye to the postman. But not everybody can afford the computer. But speaking of advantages, what are the DISADVANTAGES? As people rely more and more on the computer, they will become too close to it, some people can't even " live " without a computer. Let say, if there's a blackout on one continent, and every people on that continent rely on computers, wouldn't it be like " the end of the world"???? Moreover, people with improper sitting posture will result of backbone problem, and eyesight problem too. Speaking of technology, let's say about social impact. Technology does not only affects one person but the social community. How? We can use the connection to connect with friends and even chat with them. Like facebook, it lets other people connect with each other.
The second topic is on ethical issues on media usage Intellactual property. We all know what is COPYRIGHT. Copyright is a person's right of something, that means if he has the copyright of something, that thing or work belongs to him. If we copy someone's work, that would also result in stealing his work. The more worse situation is plagiarism: copying someone's work and pass it as your own, with no quotes or references. Sometimes, we could see that some CD stalls at night stalls sell CDs at a very low price. Actually they had abuse copyright. To copy something is very simple, just right click, copy and paste. But this would be unfair to those who put effort and work on it. Let's say, you done a really good story on your blog. The a few days later, you found someone posting the same thing as yours. How would you feel? Really unfair, right? That's why we should not copy other's work, even if you want to, seek permission, or just copy a trivial part of it.
Lastly, the differences of a blog and website. Which is better? Blog? Website? Well, in my opinion, both have advantages. Well, a blog has been easily arranged and you just need to modify it. But for a website, you need to know HTML and a lot more stuff, which you need to be skilful. But for the website, there are no limitations on what you want to put. A blog is easy to put gadgets, while the website you have to find gadgets which are only applicable for Websites. But if you have your own website, it would let poeple feel "wow he has a website of his own!" but if you have a blog, everybody can have the same domain on blogspot.com as yours.

My First Internet Lesson: The internet & WWW
Hi! My name is Chia Hou Yi, as mentioned in my profile. Yesterday was my first IS lesson. Our teacher was Mr. Kent Cheong. He introduced himself and then let us see the webpage( http://webnewmedia.ning.com/ ) and let us learn some things related to Internet.
There was a 57 page presentation, in TheInternetandWWW webpage. During that slideshow, I learnt a few Internet vocabs and acronyms such as URL: Uniform Resource Locator, ISP: Internet Service Provider, FTP: File Transfer Protocol etc. It gaves us a slight brief of the Internet's history, and I was very shocked to find out only four host nodes in 1969. (Seriously, not shocked as my mouth has dropped off), but it was fine because technology was not so advanced in those days. The internet was used by scincetists to communicate faster. And later on, it was used by other users all over the world. And since, the users of internet are growing.
Our teacher also let us see a video at youtube, that in every minute, technology tends to grow and grow. In the video, it said that estimated in 2013, they were to invent such computer better that the human brain. So, he said that as technology grows so fast, that if we do not catch up, we would not be as modern.
During this lesson, I felt that I love his teachings, and I learned more things about the internet. Before that, I learn to use the internet by myself. From this lesson, as time was not enough, he just show us the slideshows (as mentioned above) in a quick speed, so some points could not be explained clearly. But in the slideshow, the summary was The History and Sturcture of the internet, The world wide web, Web Publishing, Electronic Commerce, Other Internet Services and Netiquette. I look forward to the next lesson, and hope that I would learn more from this IS programme.
